COCA-COLA PUTS THE COOL BACK INTO CHRISTMAS WITH SELF-CHILLING COKE SINGAPORE, 18 December 2009 – Coca-Cola fans can look forward to enjoying a Superchilled Coke which chills itself upon opening, thanks to an innovative state-of-the art technology that Coca-Cola is one of the first to pioneer. The new technology involves chilling Coke bottles to between -3.5 and -6 degrees Celsius in a 6°b-lo (pronounced six degrees below) cooler. Most ordinary coolers bring the temperature of a drink to between 3-7 degrees Celsius. When the bottle is removed from the cooler, it is below freezing point, but remains liquid due to a phenomenon known as “freeze point depression”. Ice crystals start to form in the drink as the bottle cap is twisted off, allowing the consumer to enjoy a Superchilled Coke. As the ice crystals are formed within the drink, there is not taste dilution. The coolers work only for full-sugared sparkling beverages with high carbonation in PET bottle form, such as Coca-Cola and Sprite, as the ice formation or the “Magic Moment” require both an adequate degree of carbonation and adequate amounts of sugar to achieve. Products taken out of the 6°b-lo coolers also remain cold for twice longer than usual. The 6°b-lo coolers were unveiled at a sampling during the launch of the Coca-cola Christmas Caravan program at Shaw House this afternoon. Antonio Del Rosario, General Manager Coca-Cola Singapore, said: “We are very pleased that Singapore is the third city in Asia to have been picked as a test bed for this new chilling technology from Coca-Cola. Singapore is a well-established technology hub in the region and its discerning, sophisticated population makes it an ideal venue for MNCs to evaluate and improve emerging new products. “We believe that this Superchilled Coke will be a hit particularly in Singapore’s warm weather. It will certainly take our consumers’ enjoyment of sparkling beverages to a whole new level.” Other markets that have tested the 6°b-lo cooler include South Africa, Brazil, France, Hong Kong, Mexico, and the UK. Singapore consumers can expect to find the cooler in stores come 2010. Guests were treated to the new Superchilled Coke at the unveiling of the Coca-Cola Christmas Caravan at Shaw House today. They included Mediacorp artistes Darren Tan, Edmund Chen, Michelle Chong and Pierre Png; 987FM’s “Muttons at Midnight” DJs Justin Ang and Vernon A; Warner Music artistes Derrick Hoh and Jocie Guo; and entertainer Aaron Aziz. At the event, artistes from Mediacorp TV, Mediacorp radio, Warner Music and Aaron Aziz also turned on their Christmas spirit by lending their creativity for charity. On display at the caravan are four Coke bottles specially designed by these artistes. Coca-Cola Singapore has pledged to donate S$20,000 to the preferred charities of the celebrities – Singapore Red Cross Society, Gracehaven, Infant Jesus Homes and Children's Centres and Jamiyah Children’s Home. The Coca-Cola Christmas Caravan is a specially designed truck making its appearance here for the first time. The caravan was introduced in November 1995 in the US in a Christmas commercial that has become a holiday classic. Since then, Coca-Cola Christmas caravans have toured countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Philippines, to spread the festive cheer. Located outside Shaw House along Orchard Road, the caravan also serves as a redemption station for Coca-Cola Christmas Caravan packs, which contain collectibles such as Coke coasters, ice-cube trays, stirrers and a 2010 calendar. For a chance at winning the packs, consumers need to collect bottle caps, can tabs, or carton cut-outs, or combination of these, containing the “Xmas Caravan” code. The packs are limited and will be given out while stocks last at the caravan. The Coca-Cola Christmas Caravan is open for redemption at Shaw House from 18th to 24th December. There will also be scheduled performances on site from today till Christmas Eve. For more information, please visit:
